GULF OIL SPILL UPDATE

We feel it in necessary to comment on the disastrous events that are currently taking place in the Gulf of Mexico - we are speaking of the catastrophic oil spill that has been in progress for over fifty days now.  Many people are now beginning to believe that this is somehow the beginning of the fulfillment of a prophecy mentioned in the Book of Revelation.  We must insist that as horrifying as this oil spill is, it is in no way the fulfillment of any specific verses in Scripture.  Many are citing Revelation Chapter Eight, verses eight and nine:

 

Revelation 8:8-9 -

8 - And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;

 

9 - And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

 

They insist that what John the Revelator saw in his vision on the isle of Patmos was the explosion and burning of BP’s oil rig!   They defend this view by stating that John of course had no way of knowing what an oil rig was and therefore what he saw burning in the sea must have resembled a large mountain in flames, which Revelation 8:8 mentions.  “… The third part of the sea became blood …” is - they say - the reddish tint of the oil which at times will resemble a red color or a blood color.  And then they declare that the phrase “… third part of the ships were destroyed …” is speaking of the third part of the “missions” (fishing missions) of these ships being destroyed.  One person even admitted that he was AMAZED when he read this verse in Scripture and so he had to hurry up and post it on the Internet along with a video clip to explain what it was all about.  So then, this is the first time this person has even read this verse and now he is teaching it to the world.  That should tell us something about its authenticity, should it not?

 

Ladies and gentlemen, if these verses were met to be fulfilled in a literal manner then a “third part” of the geographical area of the world’s oceans would super dwarf  the Gulf oil spill to a mere drop in the barrel.  Many may say it’s only the beginning; it will reach the third part level in time.  Nonsense!  There is a sure way of capping it and in time that is what will happen.  Scripture teaches salvation through Jesus Christ and that alone.  That is what Scripture is all about!   We have this truth from the lips of Christ Himself:

 

 

 

John 5:39 - Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

 

Grant it, Scripture holds an eternity of symbols and metaphors to learn that cannot be accomplished in a single lifetime, but these are all teaching eternal salvation through the use of picturesque language.  The Bible does not concentrate on anything other than God’s eternal salvation for man through Christ Jesus.

 

Those who would declare that this oil spill is a literal fulfillment of Scripture are not being consistent even with themselves nor with their beliefs.  That is simply because they choose and pick what appeals to them without knowing scripture.  If they are going to be literal in declaring a scriptural Gulf oil spill, then they absolutely MUST first mention the first of the Trumpet Judgment (the sounding of the 1st angel), for what they have mentioned is the sounding of the Second Trumpet Judgment!  What happened to the first Trumpet Judgment?

 

The First Trumpet Judgment:

 

Revelation 8:7 - ¶The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.       

 

If God were casting literal judgments upon the earth according to His Revelation plagues that are carefully numbered in sequence, He would of course begin the Trumpet series with the first trumpet judgment and NOT the second.  This forces us to ask the question: “What happened to the sounding of the 1st angel and the burning up of a third of earth’s trees and green grass?  If the Gulf oil spill is the second angel sounding, what happened to this first literal plague that God states will come before the Gulf oil spill plague?’   Of course this is all non-sense because these plagues are spiritual plagues that affect man’s eternal salvation and nothing less than that.   For an in-depth study on the biblical phrase “third part,” please see our study at http://spiritualbiblestudies.com/Third%20Part.htm.  For a study on the Second Trumpet Judgment, please see http://spiritualbiblestudies.com/TRUMPETS/index

 

If scripture speaks at all - in a general way - about man destroying the earth or earth’s environment, it may be found in the following verse:

 

Revelation 11:18 - And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear

 

thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.
