THE ANCIENT EGYPTIAN PLAGUES

(What Do They Mean for Us Today?)

PART TEN - CONCLUSION

THE TENTH PLAGUE UPON EGYPT

THE FINAL PLAGUE

The tenth and final plague upon Egypt can be read of from Exodus 11:1 through Exodus 12:37.

Exodus 11:1 -

¶And the LORD said unto Moses, Yet will I bring one plague more upon Pharaoh, and upon Egypt; afterwards he will let you go hence: when he shall let you go, he shall surely thrust you out hence altogether.

Exodus 11:4-6 -

4 - And Moses said, Thus saith the LORD, About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt:

5 - And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of beasts.

6 - And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there was none like it, nor shall be like it any more.

Matthew 25:6 -

And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.

EVENING

Christ told His disciples that He must work the works of Him (Heavenly Father; first person of the Godhead or Trinity) while it is day, for the night will come when no man can work, John 9:4.  What did Christ mean by stating that there would come a night?  What was He speaking of when He said no man can work in the night?  Clearly Christ spoke of the spiritual demise, degradation and finally the total overtaking of His Word near the end of this present age.  Christ is the LIGHT of the world, however this light will not always be with us, as Scripture teaches.  Yes, Christ promised His elect that He would never leave us nor forsake us, and as believers we can take that to heart.  However, we are making reference here to His Word and His Spirit being in the world.  They will not always be in the world.

2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 -

3 - ¶Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

4 - Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

God gives Satan authority to plunder the worldwide church of Christ.  God removes His true Word from the world and allows Satan to rule for a “little season” (Revelation 6:11; 20:3) in the church of Christ.   As the world gradually neared this time, the spiritual condition upon the church of Christ slowly began to dim.  It is as one watching the day transform into evening and then finally into darkness.  As the church fell into this spiritual evening of apostasy, the evening wolves began to appear in higher numbers.  It was the “falling away” spoken of in 2 Thessalonians 2:3.

Ezekiel 22:25-27

25 - There is a conspiracy of her prophets in the midst thereof, like a roaring lion ravening the prey; they have devoured souls; they have taken the treasure and precious things; they have made her many widows in the midst thereof.

[Old Testament Ezekiel (like all Old Testament books) speaks to National Israel of their day but ultimately they are speaking to the New Testament spiritual Israel of the Church Age.  Israel’s prophets of old who conspired in the midst of Israel…who are they today?  Are they not today’s ministers, priests, reverends, pastors, elders, deacons, and just plain ordinary people given teaching positions within today’s church?  Yes indeed they would certainly be those responsible for bringing God’s uncompromising Word to all within the global church of Christ.  But Ezekiel 22:25 says that these people have devoured souls and made many widows in the midst of her, i.e. the church.  Are we to understand that today’s churches have killed masses of humanity, therefore creating many widows of the murdered victims?  While the homicide rate among missionary workers seems to be on the increase along with isolated areas of mass murder of believers, we must see that the above verse is not speaking of physical death.  Today’s global church has made widows out of an innumerable count of humanity.  Who then are these widows?

Revelation 21:9 - ¶And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife.

We are Christ’s bride and every true believer is spiritually married to Him.  Christ, our God and Creator is our husband.

Isaiah 54:5 - For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.

Today’s teachers within the global church are, as Ezekiel 22:25 states, making many widows in the midst thereof.  This is highly spiritual language we are studying.  All who are not saved in Christ our husband are depicted in a figurative manner as widows.  They have no husband and Christ is dead to them.]

26 - Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.

[They have put no difference between the holy and profane verse 26 tells us.  When you walk into a congregation belonging to an organized church as well as many others, do you readily notice how they teach, preach, and accept the things of the world?  They compromise Christ’s precious good news of salvation in order to go with the flow and not to offend their church members.  Abortion, gay and lesbian life styles, etc., on and on and on they go, embracing the sins of the world and importing them into their doctrines while ousting many of Christ’s basic doctrines.  Thus it is they make no distinction between the holy and the profane, as Ezekiel 22:26 tells us!]

27 - Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, to get dishonest gain.

[To destroy souls is the same as making many widows.  Those who do not know Christ as their true husband are widows indeed.]

As the church began falling away, many evening wolves appeared at its doors.  Yes, there were spiritual wolves in the church throughout its history but as we near the time of the end the light of the world (Christ’s Word) will begin to dim.  Christ is our day star (2 Peter 1:19) and as His Word begins to be attacked and altered, this world slowly begins to transcend into a spiritual evening condition, meaning that during the falling away period we were not yet at the spiritual night, but were rapidly closing in.

EVENING WOLVES

As we have stated, Christ says “I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.  As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world,” John 9:4-5.

As long as Christ or His Word is in the world, we will have spiritual light.  As the true Word of God diminishes and is in the process of being silenced (as it is today), the world’s light begins to dim as the day transcends into spiritual evening.  It is that evening that soon leads to the spiritual night in which no man can work, John 9:4.

Zephaniah 3:1-4:

1 - ¶Woe to her that is filthy and polluted, to the oppressing city!

[Who is the oppressing city?  Is it not the once spiritual Jerusalem, the New Testament church that has backslidden as did Old Testament Israel?  She has become Mother of Harlots (Revelation 17:5), known as Babylon the Great, (Revelation 17:5; 18:2).

Isaiah 1:21

How is the faithful city become an harlot! it was full of judgment; righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers.

Isaiah 26:5

¶For he bringeth down them that dwell on high; the lofty city, he layeth it low; he layeth it low, even to the ground; he bringeth it even to the dust.

Ezekiel 24:6 -

Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe to the bloody city, to the pot whose scum is therein, and whose scum is not gone out of it! bring it out piece by piece; let no lot fall upon it.

We could site many more passages that ultimately have the end-time apostate church in view as a city.  Once again it is crucial to note that this is NOT Christ’s true church.  The gates of hell cannot touch Christ, His Word or His true Church…His Bride.  These cities represent the fallen corporate church at the end of time, whose partial and literal fulfillments were once laid upon Old Testament National Israel but now they are being fulfilled on a global scale within the worldwide church of Christ.]

2 - She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in the LORD; she drew not near to her God.

[Doesn’t this description sound much like today’s organized churches?]

3 - Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they gnaw not the bones till the morrow.

[Yes, many of those who bring the Word of God in the midst of the organized churches are to a large degree…inwardly roaring lions and evening wolves.  These are spiritual beasts that prey on and devour the Lamb of God as we are reading from Zephaniah 3:1-4:]

4 - Her prophets are light and treacherous persons: her priests have polluted the sanctuary, they have done violence to the law.

[True believers flee from the corporate churches as we witness God’s Law being stomped to the ground.]

Scripture indicates that the evening wolves come into the very midst of the city (Christ’s earthly church consisting of both wheat and tares).

Habakkuk 1:8

Their horses also are swifter than the leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves: and their horsemen shall spread themselves, and their horsemen shall come from far; they shall fly as the eagle that hasteth to eat.

[Scripture gives us many passages that figuratively display the  false prophets and false teachers as horses and horsemen  charging into Jerusalem.  Revelation 9:7 speaks of them metaphorically as “horses prepared unto battle”.]

__________________________________

Let us examine one more section of scripture that shed light on evening wolves.

Jeremiah 5:1-6

1 - ¶Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it.

[Can we go to the organized congregations of the world and find believers zealous for the Word of God?  Yes, we readily see and find many who are extremely zealous for a form of godliness (2 Timothy 3:5) but upon a closer examination they will deny the many aspects of the true God and His power.

2 Timothy 3:5 -

Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

It is God who judges and believers dare not over step their roles as Christians.  It is not our place to judge those who are still in bondage within the apostate churches.  However, we do see an overflowing amount of apostasy coming from the organized churches…much of which is sheer demonic and blasphemous.]

2 - And though they say, The LORD liveth; surely they swear falsely.

[Congregations by the thousands say this but teach to the contrary in many areas of doctrine.  Clearly they are denying the power of God.]

3 - O LORD, are not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.

[Today’s organized churches know exactly where they want to be, and it doesn’t include the narrow way of the Cross of Christ.  They desire to be called a church but they have no desire for the true narrow road.

Isaiah 4:1

¶And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.

[These are they who desire to be called Christians but have no desire to follow Christ.]

4 - Therefore I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, nor the judgment of their God.

5 - I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the LORD, and the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, and burst the bonds.

[It would appear that there are many within the churches that blatantly refuse correction in order to alter Christ’s Word.]

6 - Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, and a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased.

God is using the messengers of Satan as judgment upon the apostate churches.  This judgment comes from ordinary appearing men and women by the hundreds of thousands who hold high positions within the organized churches.  These people are figuratively depicted in Scripture as locusts and evening wolves put there to overtake the congregations.  Once they have accomplished their tasks, the spiritual condition of this world will have transcended from evening to night.  The light of Christ will no longer be seen in the midst of the world’s churches.  A bright flicker here and there will have come from those who worship Christ but are now scattered from the congregations.  They have fled the apostasy and Satan’s rule of the temple (2 Thessalonians 2:4).

Earlier we cited John 9:4 -

I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

We have seen that as the “falling away” slowly engulfs and consumes the churches of the world (Abomination of Desolation), it takes with it the true Word of God.  At the pinnacle of this period of falling away the world unknowingly transcends from evening to night.  Christ told His disciples that when this night comes, then no man can work.  We do not have to speculate as to what this may mean since Scripture is crystal clear on this matter and Christ revealed it for us in John 6:29:

Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

To think that night comes when no one can work…or rather no one can believe is a most sombering thought!  What could be worse?  That, as it seems, may be why Christ referred to this particular time as great tribulation.  What could possibly be greater tribulation than that?  While there is still more studying to be done on the subject of salvation or no salvation during the night, it seems fairly clear from the Scriptures.

THE SPIRITUAL “NIGHT”

Exodus 11:6

And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there was none like it, nor shall be like it any more.

The past nine plagues upon ancient Egypt were all leading up to this final climax in the tenth plague.  We learned from these plagues that each and every one of them were not only played out literally in the land of Egypt, but will be fulfilled spiritually in the world during the time of the end.  Each particular plague held different symbols, figures, or type in portraying Satan’s end time attack upon the global church of Christ.  These are spiritual plagues and coincide with much of what we read in the Book of Revelation.  Look above to the Exodus 11:6 verse.  Do any New Testament verses come to mind?  They should!  God tells us that this tenth and final plague upon ancient Egypt will be of such severe magnitude that there has never been anything like it, nor shall there ever be!   This is precise parallel language that Christ spoke in alluding to the Great Tribulation.

Matthew 24:21

For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

The tenth plague of Egypt appears to be addressing the Great Tribulation.  What is the nature of this great tribulation?  We saw that it is a time where no man can work…that is to say it is a time where no one can believe.  As dreadful and horrifying as it may sound, It does appear that true saving faith in Christ will have been removed from the earth at that time with of course the exception of the scattered but true Church.

2 Thessalonians 2:7-8:

7 - For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

[Who is the “he” that now letteth?  It is the Holy Spirit of God, the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of Truth, or the “Comforter” that was given at Pentecost.  Consider the following conformational verse:

John 15:26 - ¶But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

[Notice that God states HE in reference to the Comforter or Holy Spirit?  Now lets read 2 Thessalonians 2:7-8 together:]

7 - For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

[The “he” seems to clearly be in reference to God’s Holy Spirit.]

8 - And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

The Holy Spirit will have been taken out of the way in preparation for the loosing of Satan and the Great Tribulation.  With God’s Holy Spirit removed from the earth how can anyone then and at that time become saved?  How can they WORK or BELIEVE?  It is the midst of spiritual night…the night cometh when no man can work, John 9:4.

NOTE: God’s Holy Spirit was not given to the world until after Christ resurrected from the dead.  However, where was the Holy Spirit during the Old Testament days?  Satan had not been bound during those days.  The Great Tribulation may resemble those days but on a much larger scale, since it is to be a time so great with tribulations wherein the world has never seen nor will see again.  The question remains: Might there be a trickle of salvation during the Great Tribulation, since there were people being saved during the Old Testament days?

Returning to the subject of great tribulation or night, we read that those who have been saved prior to this time will have been sealed by God (eternally saved) and made ready to endure.

Revelation 7:1-3 -

1 - ¶And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.

2 - And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea,

3 - Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.

[God does not allow the trumpet judgments to commence until He has sealed His servants.  From that point onward it would surely appear that salvation has come to an end.  Let us pray we are wrong, and we might be, however we must accept God’s will.]

THE MIDNIGHT CRY

Exodus 11:4-6 -

4 - ¶And Moses said, Thus saith the LORD, About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt:

5 - And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of beasts.

6 - And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there was none like it, nor shall be like it any more.

Exodus 12:29 -

29 - ¶And it came to pass, that at midnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle.

30- And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead.

The night cometh when no man can work.  What is the height or peak of night?  Is it not the midnight hour?  That is the time that ushers in the darkest of night.  To the contrary, the first sign of daylight is when we see the hint of dawn and the morning star.

Revelation 22:16 -

I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

It is at the absolute height of this spiritual night that the midnight cry is announced.  It isn’t something we can hear with our physical ears but many believers will undoubtedly be aware of that time without knowing the precise day or hour.  The midnight hour is of course a figurative term and encompasses a time span other than being a literal and specific hour.  It may not usher in the immediate return of our Lord, but does appear to announce the spiritual death of the saints from the Exodus account.

THE FIRSTBORN: DEAD

Exodus 11:5 -

And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of beasts.

Plague after plague poured upon the land of Egypt and yet after each plague Pharaoh continued to hold the Israelites captive in bondage.  The land of Egypt, as we have seen in this study, seems to clearly but symbolically represent today’s unsaved world; those who are yet still in bondage - not bondage to physical slavery, as the Israelites were in Egypt, but in bondage to spiritual and damnable sin.  Egypt prefigured those of this world who are still in spiritual darkness.  The above verse appears to be emphasizing the fact that it is the FIRSTBORN and FIRSTBORN ONLY who are being punished and judged throughout all of Egypt.  Today’s world shudders at such a thought…God killing off all of these “innocent” firstborn children of Egypt!  Keep these aggressive myths out of our public schools please!  We can almost hear the protests of these locusts.  Nonetheless God is clearly giving a divine and eternal truth to all who have eyes to see and ears to hear.  As the plagues continued to eat away at the core of Egypt and its citizens, what did we determine was the ultimate target of these attacks?  Yes, down through the centuries of the latter days (which encompasses the entire Church Age, Hebrews 1:2) it is the Word of God that is being attacked.  As the world slipped into the great falling away (2 Thessalonians 2:3) or evening, we see the doctrines of God slowly and skillfully being replaced with worldly doctrines of demons.

1 Timothy 4:1 -

¶Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.

From this point onward it was a mere matter of time before the apostasy reached its fruition.  As in ancient Egypt so is it in this time of the end.  God is sending spiritual plagues - plague upon plague - into the world.  Plagues that eat away at the truth of God’s Word, insuring that there is nothing remaining of God’s vineyard.  His pure Word has been striped as many Old Testament verses tell us.  His earthly church or vineyard has been laid waste; its trees striped to the bark; its grass burnt up; its pure waters, streams and ponds have been poisoned and made bitter.  All of this accomplished (through God’s will) by locusts, beasts, and wolves of the doctrines of Satan.  There final and ultimate goal?  To silence (which is to figuratively kill) the true Gospel of Jesus Christ, who is the “…FIRSTBORN among many brethren, (Romans 8:29).

Revelation 11:7 -

And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.

Daniel 8:23-24 -

23 - And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up.

24 - And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.

Daniel 7:25

And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

Daniel 8:9-12 -

9 - And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land.

10 - And it waxed great, even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them.

11 - Yea, he magnified himself even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down.

12 - And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and prospered.

Daniel 12:6-7 -

6 - And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?

7 - And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.

JESUS CHRIST:

THE FIRSTBORN

God’s infallible Word never fails.  Its mysteries are there and waiting for His people to unravel.  “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth,” (2 Timothy 2:15).

The word firstborn as it is defined in the Old Testament Hebrew carries the meaning of chief;- eldest son, firstborn or firstling. The New Testament carries basically the same meaning for firstborn, meaning: firstborn or firstbegotten.  We read of the many spiritual characteristics of God the Son in Psalm 89.  Consider verse 27:

“Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth,”

(Psalm 89:27).

Who is the Holy One of Israel?  He is Creator God; He is God the Father, God the Son, and He is God the Holy Spirit.  These three are ONE, 1 John 5:7.  God the Son in Christ Jesus is God’s FIRSTBORN.  Let us Consider the following verses:

Isaiah 14:30

And the firstborn of the poor shall feed, and the needy shall lie down in safety: and I will kill thy root with famine, and he shall slay thy remnant.

POOR AND NEEDY

[Who are the poor and needy whom this firstborn shall cause to lie down in safety?  Of course it is Christ and His Gospel of salvation that will cause His people - poor and needy - to lie down in safety.  This safety is the eternal safety of God’s everlasting care known as inheriting salvation and the Kingdom of Heaven.]

Let us consider a number of verses that confirm this thought of God’s elect being termed the Poor and Needy.

Psalms 12:5 - For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the LORD; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him.

Psalms 14:6 - Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the LORD is his refuge.

Psalms 34:6 - This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.

Psalms 35:10 - All my bones shall say, LORD, who is like unto thee, which deliverest the poor from him that is too strong for him, yea, the poor and the needy from him that spoileth him?

Psalms 37:14 - The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation.

Psalms 40:17 - But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.

Psalms 70:5 - But I am poor and needy: make haste unto me, O God: thou art my help and my deliverer; O LORD, make no tarrying.

Psalms 72:12 - For he shall deliver the needy when he crieth; the poor also, and him that hath no helper.

Psalms 109:22 - For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.

Isaiah 41:17 - When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the LORD will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them.

Luke 6:20 - ¶And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.

Luke 4:18- The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

Matthew 5:3 - ¶Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Luke 7:22 - Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.

Philippians 4:19 - But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

[Christ will supply all of our needs; those who are drawn to Him from a spiritually poor and needy status.  ALL believers are spiritually poor and needy prior to Christ quickening us in His Spirit.]

Indeed Christ is the FIRSTBORN of the Poor and Needy.

Isaiah 14:30

And the firstborn of the poor shall feed, and the needy shall lie down in safety: and I will kill thy root with famine, and he shall slay thy remnant.

Colossians 1:13-15 -

13 - Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

14 - In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

15 - Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

Romans 8:29 - ¶For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Colossians 1:18 - And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

Hebrews 12:23 - To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

Not only is Christ the Firstborn in the spiritual essence, He was also incarnated as a man through the Virgin Mary, and as such He was her firstborn in the physical.

Matthew 1:25-  And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

Luke 2:7 - And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

EGYPT’S FIRSTBORN ON THE CROSS

As Christ, the world’s Firstborn, went to the cross to atone for the sins of all whom God the Father had ordained unto salvation, His death and crucifixion was told and played out in the land of Egypt.  The final plague upon Egypt appears to symbolize two events:  First, it seems to be depicting the end of the age when Satan’s ambassadors with eat away at the Gospel until it is finally spiritually killed or silenced.  Secondly, we see a great hint of truth in the crucifixion of Christ from the killing of Egypt’s firstborn -

Zechariah 12:10 - And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

Let us break down this verse.  When does God pour upon the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem the spirit of grace and supplications?  (Please see Chapter XIII “God’s Spiritual Israel” of the Fifth Trumpet Judgment.)  The spirit of grace and supplication was poured out at Pentecost as God sent His Holy Spirit into the world.  But Zechariah chapter twelve is speaking of King David and the inhabitants of literal Jerusalem you say?  No, in short these are spiritual terms from Old Testament typologies.

Acts 2:1-4 -

1- ¶And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

2 - And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

3 - And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

4 - And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Zechariah 12:10 tells us that God will pour out His “Spirit” upon the house of David and upon the inhabitant of Jerusalem.  Does God pour out His Spirit, through the full course of the Church Age, upon all flesh?  Of course not, it is only poured upon His elect; those whom are called by God.  As Christians, we are the inhabitants of spiritual Jerusalem.  Our King is Christ who was symbolized throughout the Old Testament as King David.  The true Church or the Israel of God is the spiritual House of David.

Mark 12:36 - For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.

Luke 1:32 - He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

[Christ literally came from the line of King David.  As King David ruled over Israel, in like matter Christ rules as King over His eternal Israel.]

Back to Zechariah 12:10.  God has given grace and supplication (grace, favor, and mercy) to His true Church as provided from Pentecost onward.  There were those who found grace in the sight of the Lord back in the Old Testament day, however for the most part this spirit of grace and supplications would not come fully until Pentecost.

Psalms 84:11 - For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

John 1:17 - For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

Acts 20:24 - But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

Romans 5:17 - For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.

Romans 11:5 - Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

Once more, let us read and focus in on the second half of this verse:

Zechariah 12:10

And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications:

…and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

This is not the Second Coming when national Israel shall look upon Christ whom they have pierced.  Scripture does not teach that.  No, being more in line with Scripture we realize that no one can look upon Christ in the true essence of His atonement.  Only believers will have some real spiritual knowledge of the depths of that crucifixion.  Only true believers will be able to look upon Christ whom they (the world, not merely the Jews) have pierced. They (GOD’S ELECT) shall mourn for Christ…“as one mourneth for his only son.”  Christians will be in bitterness for Him…“as one that is in bitterness for his FIRSTBORN,” as Zechariah 12:10 explains.  Multitudes of “church goers” hear the story of the crucifixion over and over again but never really get it. They can’t know the great spiritual impact of Christ’s sufferings; it is unattainable to them.  Only those who have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb can know this true bitterness for what we have done to Christ.  It is of course all in God’s plan.  But the faith is in the bitterness of mourning for Christ…AS ONE IS IN BITTERNESS FOR HIS FIRSTBORN, again from Zechariah 12:10.

The killing of all of Egypt’s firstborn (as the tenth plague) seems to clearly point to the ultimate killing of the firstborn - the crucifixion of the world’s Firstborn, i.e. Christ Jesus.  In addition, the ten plagues upon ancient Egypt bring swift judgments upon the entire land of Egypt.  This land certainly symbolized a future world in which much of mankind would still be in a land of bondage; a bondage not to physical slavery but a bondage to deadly sin and transgressions toward the Creator.   The harsh plagues of locusts, swarms, etc. coming upon Egypt in fast succession destroyed all of the “green things” or “herbs” of the land as well as its waters, ponds, streams, and rivers.  This seems to be more of a scene to the prelude of the time of the end when Satan’s spiritual armies invade the corporate church (spiritual land of Israel).  As is the case at this very hour, the church is under attack as judgment from God.  Who, knowing and understanding the Holy Scriptures, can refute this?  What is Satan’s ultimate but age-old goal at this hour?  Is it not but to silence or to spiritually kill the FIRSTBORN of the land?  We appear to be near or on the midnight hour when God smote all of the firstborn in the land of Egypt.  This Old Testament event, as truthful, historic, and parabolic in nature, appears to reveal that God’s son - His firstborn - will first be killed and afterwards His Word and testimony will be silenced or spiritually killed at the midnight hour, as it was in Egypt - done for our admonition, 1 Corinthians 10:11.

FIRSTFRUITS

As Christ is the FIRST OF THE FIRSTFRUITS; all believers in Christ are counted as firstfruits of God.

Revelation 14:4 - These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.

James 1:18 - Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

1 Corinthians 15:23 - But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.

1 Corinthians 15:20 - ¶But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

Romans 8:23 - And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

Romans 11:16- For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.

The New Testament word firstfruits carries a similar meaning to the word firstborn, both in the Old and New Testaments.  It is defined as beginning, first, firstfruit, chief.

THE DOOR POSTS

Hebrews 11:28 - Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.

[The above verse is making reference to Moses as he kept the Passover after God smote Egypt with plagues, allowing the children of Israel to cross the Sinai and eventually enter into the Promise Land of Canaan.  Note that the Passover is “…the sprinkling of blood.”  Moses led the children of Israel as they observed the Passover…“lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.”  The fear of God was put into the heart of Moses.  He did not want to suffer the consequences of the hand that struck down the firstborn.  It was God’s hand that rained judgment upon Egypt by killing all of the firstborn as the final judgment that released Moses and the Israelites, allowing them entrance into the physical Promise Land.  The hidden and spiritual implications are very high.

Exodus 12:12-13 -

12 - For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.

13 - And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.

In preparation for that first Passover, the children of Israel were to take a lamb, one without spot or blemish.

Exodus 12:5 - Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:

This lamb without blemish was without question signifying Christ and His shed blood of atonement for our sins.  Christ is said in Scripture to be the ultimate sacrificial lamb.

1 Peter 1:19-20 -

19 - But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

20 - Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

Revelation 12:11 - And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

Revelation 7:14 - And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

Revelation 5:6 - ¶And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

We could cite many more passages that speak of Christ as our Lamb…the Lamb slain before the foundation of the world.  What saved the children of Israel from having their firstborn children killed at that midnight hour?

Exodus 12:27 - That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the LORD'S passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped.

God passed over the houses of the Israelites because they had followed His instructions:

Exodus 12:22-23 -

22 - And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel [literally the upon door post] and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning.

23 - For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you.

As far back in history as that was, the blood was still a symbol of our salvation through the atonement of Christ.  Those of Israel who placed their faith in these instructions symbolized all in the Church Age who will truly trust on the Lord Jesus Christ from their hearts.  They trust in Him and that requires believing and trusting in the shed blood of our Lamb.  They placed the lamb’s blood on the top of the door and upon each side.  It is the mark of the cross.

Exodus 12:51 - And it came to pass the selfsame day, that the LORD did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies.

[The selfsame day: meaning the children of Israel left the land of Egypt the exact day that they had entered it 430 years prior.]
